BIOPHILIA: The Love of Living Things
ISTD Project
The brief aimed to create a piece of design work that helped reconnect the reader to nature. I wanted to create a typographic artefact that incorporated an illustrative style in order to engage the viewers’ attention. Within each spread there is an illustration that contains a letter. The letter within that visual corresponds to the beginning letter of the title within its spread. Each letter in each spread is in order and eventually spells out ‘Biophilia’. There is visual indication of the pairing typefaces in the content page.
The patterns at the beginning and end of the book are made from the letters of the chosen typeface to familiarise the viewer and help them recognise some letters before discovering them later on. The enlargement on text in each spread gives a slight inclination of what is to come.
The grid for this artefact has a considerable amount of negative space in order to balance out the weight of the text and intricacies of the visual. Also allowing room for finer details of type.
The style for the illustrations was inspired by Art Nouveau. I chose this style because of its feminine motifs that reminded me of mother nature. This became a focal point as the briefs main point was to reconnect humans to nature.
The content is divided into three sections, those three sections come from different aspects of using Biophilic Design.
Nature in Space
The first three spreads focus on the nature in space, the idea is about the different elements in nature such as lights, water, earth and shadows. I wanted to focus on what comes from earth.
Nature of the Space
The following three spreads focus on the feel of an atmosphere and expansive views. They are all around us and all we have to do is stop and stare or listen. Using our sensing to help relieve stress.
Nature Analogues
The last three spreads discuss the power of natural remedies. This with presented with natural analogues, such as patterns, ornamentations and other visual aspects.
