HUNTER: Beer Packaging
Durham
Packaging design for “The Hunter” pub chain. The city I was designing for was Durham, rich in its history that is showcased through its buildings. The focus for Durham during this project was the architecture of the three most popular buildings there, The Durham Castle, The Durham Cathedral, and The Bowes Museum. They all displayed aspects of the architecture that are distinguishable in the city of Durham. These styles are Gothic and Romanesque.
The branding of “The Hunter” was created with subtle visual indicators towards arrowheads. The illustrations were those historical landmarks and a decorative frame to replicate some of those motifs found in those architectural styles. There is an arch below the logotype and below the word “Durham” because of the meaning behind the name. The name “Durham” comes from the Old English word for hill, “Dun”
Not only is Durham an important religious site but also a defensive one. Situated high on a hill and protected by the river on three sides, Durham was important in defence against the Scots invading English lands. The Cathedral and Castle were built together by the community of Benedictine monks who wanted a monumental shrine for Saint Cuthbert and a place to live for the Bishop of Durham.
